University of Calgary Students Sell Cutco Cutlery, Raise Money for Children's Wish Foundation

CALGARY, Alberta (BusinessWire EON) June 4, 2007 --     This spring, the business school announced that its cutlery-selling campaign raised $26,000 to help fulfill the dreams of three children with life-threatening diseases. One of them is Shaylynn Plotsky, a five year old who suffers from restrictive cardiomyopathy. The Calgary students will help fulfill her dream of going to Disneyland in California.

For several years, sales management classes taught by Dr. Derek Hassay, assistant professor of marketing at the Haskayne school, have partnered with Vector Marketing, the direct sales division of Cutco Cutlery, to raise money for this charity while gaining valuable selling experience.

Cutco Cutlery, based in Olean, New York, is the largest kitchen cutlery manufacturer in North America. Founded 58 years ago, Cutco sells its products through a network of college students in Canada and the United States. Vector Marketing offers a sales training program that teaches students a wide range of skills, including time management, presentation, lead generation, customer service and how to work in a commission-structured environment.

Students, according to Hassay, aren't graded on actual sales, but rather on how they manage the process. "We're creating a corporate sales department," he said. "Students develop a marketing strategy, make sales presentations, create sales reports and then critique themselves after each demonstration."

Cutco Cutlery is also part of selling courses at Purdue University and Illinois State University.
